About Us
Home Spun in Georgia was an idea that came about in 2003. My daughter and I were talking about gift ideas for Christmas. When looking for gifts to give people, we are more drawn to gifts that have natural ingredients. We decided that lotion was a good idea, but we wanted to make our own. At our house we are all good cooks, and since making lotion is cooking, we thought that we would give it a try. We made our first batch of lotion on November 1st 2003. Everyone that we gave our lotion to loved it. From there we made dozens of bottles of lotion and we started to sell it. We started out by selling it to friends, family and then by word of mouth.
In 2004 we started making soap. The first batches of soap were an experiment. We purchased book after book, trying different oils and recipes. Soap makers do not give their recipes and tricks to the trade easily, so much of what we were learning was from trial and error.
We then got more creative and started making gift baskets.
Since a basket needs more than lotion and soap, we started making candles, and body wash. Each basket we made was a true work of art. The details that go into each basket are very personal. Each basket has the same basic items, but the candles are poured into vintage glassware that we have picked up from antique shops. Some of the candles are also poured into clay pots purchased from my step mother Margy who is an artist in Oklahoma City . Her work is very beautiful and each piece is either hand thrown, or hand built. All of her glazes are done by hand. None of her work is assembly line work; each piece is unique as there is not another piece identical to it. Each basket has a hand made card in it that is addressed to the recipient explaining the uniqueness of the basket and who has purchased the basket for them. Each basket is made to order. There are no two baskets that are identical.
In 2005 we perfected the process of making soap and lotion, learning a lot along the way. We learned what we could use as natural preservatives. We tested our lotions to see what the shelf life would be using food grade citric acid and steric acid. We started making lip balm, guest soaps, and hand milled soaps. We started incorporating all these ideas in our gift baskets to again make each basket a work of art.
In 2006 we decided that it was time to market our soaps and lotions. After all the research, and testing we were ready. We want to share our unique soaps, lotions, and baskets with others so that they too can experience how luxurious our products feel. Home Spun is a tiny family business that invites you to share our pride of unique products.
Thank you for your interest and God Bless,
